Our friends in Oklahoma have had a difficult few weeks in Oklahoma. Deadly Oklahoma tornadoes have taken lives, destroyed homes and businesses, and uprooted families. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those who have been effected by these terrible natural disasters. We know of their lives will never be the same, but if there is one bright spot in all this – it is the one shed on the amazing stories of survival.
Here at Breathe Free, we are devoted to the health and happiness of our feline friends. So, needless to say, it warmed our hearts when we saw the sweet, sweet image captured by Time photographer Justin Lott showing a woman in Moore, OK embracing her cat, Sammi, whom she found standing on the rubble of their home in the days following the tornado.
Another remarkable story comes from the Dallas Morning News. The paper reported on a boy who discovered his missing 13-year-old cat, Egor, six days after the tornado. Egor was found trapped in his litter box in the rubble of the boy’s family home. Veterinarians speculate little Egor survived thanks to the subsequent rain that fell after the tornado as that gave him the water source he needed to live.
These, of course, are the lucky ones. So many other displaced pets still need medical care and homes. If you’d like to get involved with Helping Pets in Oklahoma, here is some information.
- The efforts of the Bella Foundation to help tornado victims through volunteerism and donation of supplies.
- Hill’s Pet Nutrition Disaster Relief Network, which donated pet food and bowls to organize outlets for distribution to dogs and cats in need.
- The Blogger Disaster Response Network, a collaboration between BlogPaws, WorldVets, and the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA).
