5 Surprising Cat Facts You Probably Didn’t Know

Get rid of litter box odorWe know all our Breathe Free’ers pride themselves on their cat knowledge. Our customers know what makes their cats tick… what makes them purr… and what makes them mad! Our cat litter pad customers also want the very best for their cats and go out of their way to ensure their litter box is clean, tidy, and odor-free. But recently we stumbled upon some cat facts that even took us by surprise.

Cats REALLY LIKE Running Water

We know cats hate being bathed and getting wet, but put a nice running water source in front of them – and they’ll be your friend for life. Cats find cool, running water to be appealing — it’s a natural behavior, because stream water is less likely to be contaminated than a stagnant pool.  Cats tend to be chronically dehydrated, and feline fountains are proven to get cats to drink more water.

(This is why cats love to play with the faucet!)

Panting Indicates a Problem

While dogs pant to cool off, a panting cat could be sign of major distress. Vets say cat panting can be from extreme anxiety, it can also be a sign of respiratory or cardiovascular problems.

Call the doc if you see your cat panting!

Choose Canned Cat Food

Ever wonder why the canned cat food display is so much bigger than the one for dry cat food? This is because vets recommend feeding canned cat food over kibble. Canned foods have a higher percentage of protein and fat than dry foods and are significantly higher in water content than kibble (70 percent vs 10 percent). Also, canned foods tend to be more palatable to cats that are finicky, elderly or have dental problems.

Avoid Eye Contact

While most people love to stare adoringly into their cats’ eyes, your feline friend doesn’t prefer it. Cats don’t like eye contact, so will almost always go to the person who’s not looking at them. This also is the answer to the age-old mystery of why cats always seem to go to the one person in the room who doesn’t like cats.

Tail Tale Signs

You can tell what mood your cat’s in just by watching his tail.

Upright = happy.

Moving slowly = keep petting me.

Tail low and twitching = on the prowl.

Swishing rapidly = leave me alone.
